That was Then...

That was then. This is now.

The '50s were a special time in history. We seemed to be experiencing a relatively naive and peaceful period in time. Gasoline was as low as 15 cents a gallon. Television was just getting started, along with central air conditioning and a few other conveniences that we take for granted now. We were testing A-Bombs in Nevada. A young man by the name of Elvis was just begining his singing career. The massive social changes of the '60s and the effects of the Vietnam war were yet to be encountered. You could even leave your house and automobile unlocked most of the time.

The Milwaukee Braves won the World Series over the New York Yankees in a classic six game series. My best friend's father put money down to insure delivery of Ford's revolutionary new car, the "Edsel", in the following year. The movie "Bridge on the River Kawi" swept the Oscar awards. "Love Me Tender" was one of the year's best selling songs. Hugh Hefner launched the "Playboy" Magazine. By the way, if you still had your 50 cent, December 1953 premiere issue of Playboy it is worth about $3,500.00 on ebay now; just keeping up with inflation.

The first artificial satellite was launched from Earth. Sputnik I was oribited by the Soviet Union, marking the dawn of the Earth's Space Age.

A family of Culver cadets consisting of the Class of '57 was growing up together.

A great deal has changed since then. However many of us still find that our roots were developed together on that campus in north central Indiana. The fond memories, the strong academic and athletic building blocks were put into place during those years. We developed close friendships that will last a lifetime.
