Reflections on

Crunching through the snow Chapel clock chimes

We longed for the return of fair weather, but there was nevertheless a certain beauty to winter -- Howard Waugh '57.

Paul Steinle '57 captured an unforgettable image of Culver in winter in his "Reflections:"

"My favorite imaginary Culver postcard is walking back, after taps, across campus, from the Sally Port to C.T. on a cold winter evening. The walks are covered lightly with snow; the paths illuminated by cones of light from Culver's ancient lampposts. The only sound -- snow crunching beneath my feet; time stands still; the campus is at rest."
The image above is an impressionistic, digital creation by Bill Mueller '57, based on a daytime snow scene found in the 1954 Culver Roll Call. This Image is Copyrighted 2007, Bill Mueller, All Rights Reserved.

Bob Hartman, Culver archivist and historian emeritus, shares the following letter with us, written in 1989. His words also capture the memory and, so well express the image of those snowy days at Culver for all of us.
